Mitchell County Conservation Board: Stewarding Streams and Strengthening Community

In partnership with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and local landowners, the Mitchell County Conservation Board proudly contributed to a transformative fish passage project that reconnected over 10 miles of stream habitat in Mitchell County. This collaborative effort removed a low-head dam that had long blocked native fish species from accessing upstream spawning grounds.

MCCB’s involvement included:

  • Coordinating with state and local partners
  • Supporting ecological assessments and restoration planning
  • Engaging the community in conservation education

The project not only restored aquatic connectivity—it also improved water quality, enhanced wildlife habitat, and created new recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

Our Mission

The Mitchell County Conservation Board is committed to:

  • Preserving and enhancing natural resources
  • Providing outdoor recreation and environmental education
  • Fostering a strong connection between people and nature

Since 1956, MCCB has managed over 3,000 acres of public land, offering spaces for hiking, fishing, camping, and wildlife observation. Our work is rooted in the belief that healthy ecosystems and informed communities go hand in hand.

Looking Ahead: Our Vision for Mitchell County

MCCB envisions a future where:

  • Streams flow freely and support diverse aquatic life
  • Public lands are accessible, resilient, and ecologically vibrant
  • Conservation is a shared responsibility across generations

Whether through habitat restoration, trail development, or educational programming, MCCB continues to lead with purpose and partnership. The success of the fish passage project is just one example of how local action can create lasting environmental impact.
