Bad Axe Watershed Stewards
Bad Axe Watershed
Southwest Wisconsin

The Bad Axe Watershed Stewards is a grassroots conservation group based in southwestern Wisconsin, dedicated to protecting the Bad Axe River watershed through sustainable land and water management. Formed under Wisconsin’s Producer-Led Watershed Protection Grant Program, the group brings together farmers, conservationists, and community members to implement practices that reduce erosion, improve water quality, and support resilient, profitable agriculture. Their work includes streambank restoration, cover cropping, nutrient management, and flood mitigation, often in collaboration with the Valley Stewardship Network and the Hill Country Watershed Alliance—a regional partnership of four watershed councils.
The four council’s in the Hill Country Watershed Alliance are
- Bad Axe Watershed Stewards
- Coon Creek Community Watershed Council
- Rush Creek Watershed Conservation Council
- Tainter Creek Farmer-Led Watershed Council
Looking ahead, the Bad Axe Watershed Stewards aim to expand conservation practices, strengthen flood infrastructure, deepen farmer engagement, and enhance water quality monitoring, all while fostering regional collaboration and community education. As one of four councils in the Hill Country Watershed Alliance, the Bad Axe Watershed Stewards meet quarterly with other watershed groups to share updates, plan joint events, strengthen relationships, and coordinate conservation efforts across the region.
