Alley Cropping Workshop | Franklin, MO

This workshop will cover the principles of alley cropping including design, implementation, equipment and tree crops suited for these systems. Ron Revord, Ph.D., assistant research professor, will discuss growing chestnuts and hazelnuts in Missouri and lead a tour of his breeding program at HARF. Participants will have an opportunity to talk to experienced producers in a learning circle format, and financing agroforestry operations will also be addressed. We will the cover the principles of alley cropping, including design and implementation, equipment and infrastructure, and then take a deeper dive into the details of specific tree crops ideal for these systems in the Midwest. Revord will discuss growing chestnuts and hazelnuts in Missouri and then we will take a tour of the various plantings at the MU Horticulture and Agroforestry Research Farm (HARF). Participants will have an opportunity to talk to experienced producers, both conventional and organic, in a learning circle format. Cost-share incentive programs that can help finance establishing alley cropping, such as the Expanding Agroforestry Project and EQIP, will also be discussed. Cost to register is $10 and includes lunch.

Wisconsin Neonic Forum

On behalf of Trout Unlimited, Clean Wisconsin, Rivers Alliance of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Tribal Conservation Advisory Council, the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, the Black Earth Creek Watershed Association, UW-Extension, WI DATCP and WI DNR, we would like to invite you to attend Wisconsin’s First Neonicotinoid Forum scheduled for October 30, 2024 at UW-Madison.

Neonicotinoids, or “neonics”, are the most widely used insecticides in Wisconsin and globally, applied to millions of acres of agricultural and urban land each year. What benefits do they provide and what risks do they pose? What impacts are they having and what can be done to avoid greater impacts to our insect populations? Come to the event to learn more about this emerging issue!

MASWCD Annual Convention & Trade Show

About
The Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (MASWCD) Annual Convention is a premier event that draws more than 700 conservation leaders from across the state of Minnesota. Each year, Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) officials, resource professionals, landowners, conservation leaders, industry professionals and agency representatives gather to network and discuss conservation policies and implementation, and to learn the newest technologies affecting natural resource management.

The MASWCD annual convention includes business meetings, updates on current issues, keynote address, informational sessions, exhibit area, and recognition of outstanding soil and water conservation districts (SWCDs) and individuals.

At the business meeting, the state’s 440 elected SWCD board members have the opportunity to vote on issues that should become part of MASWCD’s policy platform.

From grassroots initiatives to innovative conservation practices, the convention provides attendees with new ideas that can be implemented across the state.

2025 Keynote Speakers

Tom Cotter
Tom is a fourth-generation farmer and active member of the Minnesota Soil Health Coalition. He started planting cover crops in 1998, which helped him transition a third of his acres to organic cash crops and grass-fed beef. He was recently named a finalist for the inaugural Minnesota Leopold Conservation Award.

Mark Schiller and Simeon Rossi
Mark and Simeon co-founded Loon Liquor Company, an organic micro distillery in Northfield, Minnesota, crafting delicious spirits from organic, local suppliers. They recently won the Food, Ag, and Beverage Division of the 2024 MN Cup, a startup competition for entrepreneurs.
